June 2 - Joseph Joiner Sweeps Races at
Northwest Florida Speedway and Southern Raceway

Milton, Fla., - June 2, 2009 - After a two week hiatus from local competition, Joseph Joiner proved this past weekend that the time away didn’t cause him to lose his touch at the dirt tracks near his Milton, Fla., home. The 15-year-old Late Model driver returned from competing at the Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. to sweep the weekend’s FASTRAK Weekly Racing Series Panhandle Region events at Northwest Florida Speedway and Southern Raceway.
Joiner started Friday night’s feature at NWFS from the outside of the front row after setting the second fastest time in qualifying. Unable to pull ahead on the start, he used a strong move to the inside of the leader to claim the lead on the third lap and led the rest of the 25-lap race unchallenged. The win is his first at the Blackman, Fla., racetrack this season.
The next night Joiner picked up right where he left off, qualifying on the pole and leading every lap of Southern Raceway’s Late Model feature to claim his second win of the season at his hometown track. The weekend’s victories are his third and fourth of the season and they give him a total of 12 top-five finishes in 14 starts this season.
“This weekend was two of the best nights we’ve had in a long time,” Joiner said. “We’ve ran good all season, but to get two wins in one weekend is awesome, especially after racing at two new tracks the week before. When you go somewhere new like that, it’s real easy to be off on your setup when you come back to these local tracks. But luckily that wasn’t the case.”
“I also think the new tire rule that Northwest Florida and Southern are using has really helped us a lot. With the way it was before, some guys were getting away with running softer tires and they had a big advantage. Now everyone’s equal. And I think it showed this weekend.”
Joiner and his race team are planning to take the upcoming weekend off, but the team will be back in action the following week when the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series visits NWFS and Southern Raceway. The touring series for Super Late Models allows a weight break for Crate Late Models and awards bonus money to the highest finishing Crate. With the wins this week, Joiner is confident about his chances in both races.
“With the weight break they’re giving the Crates, I think we’ll be competitive in the Mississippi State Series races,” he said. “I’m sure there’s going to be a strong field of Super Late Models at both races, but I think we stand a pretty good chance of being the highest finishing Crate. And you never know, depending on what the track conditions are, we might even be able to run near the front.”
